During my 10 minute break at work today...
I checked my phone and had a missed call from my grandma in Hawaii, who I haven't talked to since the week of my birthday. So I called her back...
Grandma: ...Hello? *weak voice*
Me: Mamang? Hello?
Her: *silence*
Me: HELLO?? Mamang..? Are you there? It's Julzen.
Her: Oh! Julsen! How come you are calling me?
Me: I had a missed call from you.
Her: Oh, no no no. I did not call.
Right then and there, I knew something was just wrong. My grandma has been surviving in this world through so many hardships in life, it's too hard to imagine. So as the call continues...
Her: So did you get my card?
Me: Mamang... what card?
Her: Your birthday card! You never called me.
My birthday was in October, and I know I called her that same week to say thank you...
Me: I did get the card, Mamang. I called you and said thank you. Remember?
Her: ... Oh. I don't remember.. Well okay then. I miss you! I love you! Tell everyone I said hi!
Me: We miss and love you too, Mamang. How are you? It's so nice hearing from you.
Her: Oh, you know.. I'm still ticking. I'm still here... Don't you worry about me.
At that moment, I fought the tears coming down. I didn't want anyone to question why I was crying, so I tried my hardest to hold back my emotions. When she said, "I'm still ticking" just broke my heart. She literally times herself on how many seconds of the day she lives in this world. It's too early to know whether she's losing her memory now, but I pray hard for her not to leave. Now I understand why my dad does whatever he can to let her know how much he loves her. When my father was in college, he grew up with 5 other siblings. His family was so poor, that his parents had a decision whether to put him or his brother to college. They chose his brother, only for the fact that they thought my dad had a very low IQ. So my father ran away from home to work in the day & make money to afford to go to school at night. It took him 7years. On the year he was going to graduate, he gets a notice that his father had passed away. All my dad wanted to do was to prove that he could make them proud, but never had the chance to. I can't afford to see my dad lose another one of his parents while he's not there... again. It's too heartbreaking. I lost one grandmother, I'm not ready to lose another one. And I know for sure that my dad isn't either.
Every year, my grandma sends me a birthday card. Since we live in different states, that's really one of the ways I know she's still here; that she's still alive. If ever there's a year that I don't get a birthday card, there's no doubt in my mind what the reason could be.
I wish I could just put my hand in the screen and...
